CANTOR SHIMON SMITH

Weaves the soul of Israeli music with the heart of the Jewish American spirit, guides through prayer, song, and celebration. Offers melodies that uplift, rituals that resonate, and spiritual moments that connect. Invites to explore the power of Jewish sound and soul.

ABOUT

Cantor Shimon Smith brings the vibrant spirit of Israeli music and the deep resonance of Jewish prayer to his role as Music Director, and Youth and Family Director at Romemu Manhattan.

Born in the States, raised in Israel from childhood, Shimon’s path blends leadership, creativity, and spiritual connection. After serving as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces—where he received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Soldier—Shimon became a Jewish Agency shaliach, fostering Jewish identity and community across the U.S.

Upon returning to Israel, he studied at the prestigious Rimon School for Music and Jazz and earned a bachelor’s degree in history and Jewish studies.  Shimon is a full member of the Cantors Assembly.

For over a decade, Shimon was a key figure in Israel’s pluralistic Jewish movement, leading musical prayer and rallying for egalitarian Judaism alongside the IMPJ, Women of the Wall, and other pluralistic organizations. As the cantorial soloist and head of the b’nai mitzvah program at Beit Daniel Tel Aviv, he shaped meaningful Jewish experiences for 13 years.

Now based in New York City, Shimon’s work at Romemu together with Rabbi David Ingber bridges tradition and innovation, offering music and ritual that inspire and uplift.

His original songs, heard on Jewish rock radio and streaming platforms, connect audiences around the world.

A sought-after voice actor, Shimon is known as the Israeli voice of iconic characters like Scar, Thanos, and Hefty Smurf, as well as one of the voices behind Waze.

Shimon lives on the Upper West Side with his wife Rebecca, daughter Lily, and their dog Lucy.

In this passage, the prophet Isaiah tells King Hezekiah that God has heard his prayer, seen his tears, and will heal him. What fascinates me is that this story in 2 Kings is almost identical to one found in Isaiah, chapter 39 — but with a key difference. The beautiful words of healing are missing from the version in Isaiah. This makes the account in 2 Kings unique and, according to biblical scholars, likely the more accurate version. Reading both carefully, you can see why the healing words may have been left out — but the original story reminds us that it is never too late for hope.
